Answer in brief
SBA-backed lines, what lenders ask for, and the federal rules on denials and discrimination.
Content reviewed 8 November 2026. How this is assessed.
- SBA-backed lines of credit: The SBA does not lend directly under its 7(a) program. It guarantees part of loans made by lenders, and several 7(a) options can be structured as lines of credit.
- What lenders look at: Expect a lender to look at your credit history, your projected costs and revenue, and your documents. For a new business, the owner's personal credit usually carries the most weight.
- If you are denied, and fair lending rules: Regulation B bars credit discrimination on a prohibited basis and applies to business credit. It also sets rules on notifying applicants, which differ by business revenue.
- What credit score do you need for a business line of credit?: The credit score you need for a business line of credit is not set by any public rule. Lenders set their own criteria, and for a new business they usually look at the owner's personal credit.
